Self Hypnosis

In this article we will briefly outline what Hypnosis and self hypnosis are; how to perform self hypnosis on your self and how to construct a hypnotic script to enable you to perform self hypnosis.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is when you or someone else deliberately alters your state of consciousness to the Alpha brain wave region for the purposes of directing specific suggestions directly to your subconscious mind. The Alpha brain wave is when you are relaxed but alert. While you are in this state the conscious mind becomes quiet and passive which makes it possible for suggestions to be made, although your are still conscious and aware, you remain oblivious to external distractions.

Hypnosis is a lot like daydreaming. When you daydream you alter your state of consciousness to the Alpha brain region also. All the while, you are conscious and aware, yet you remain oblivious to external distractions. You may have experienced this state when you have been on a journey and get to your destination and been completely oblivious to what was going on around you. But if something were to catch your attention you would immediately become alert.  

There are many myths about Hypnosis. Some believe you can be made to do things against your will; that you can be hypnotised without consent; that some individuals can’t be hypnotised; only weak minded people can be hypnotised; a hypnotised person is in a trance or is unconscious; a person can get stuck in hypnosis and deep hypnosis is needed to get good results. I’m sure there are many more.

In actual fact, it is impossible to hypnotise someone without first gaining their consent to do so. There has to be a willingness on their part to be hypnotised.

There is a common misconception with hypnosis that you relinquish control when in a hypnotic trance, when in reality you are taking back control when in a trance state.

When you are in a hypnotic trance you are aware of everything being said, as you can hear everything. You are aware of where you are and what is happening and you can easily accept or reject any suggestions being made. So don’t be put off by all the myths you may have heard about Hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a wonderful and effective to tool to help you achieve your goals, change habits and limiting beliefs.

CAUTION
If you suffer from mental or other health problems you should seek advice from your doctor first before attempting to use hypnosis. You should have your doctor sanction the use of hypnosis for the treatment you intend to use it for. If you participate in the consumption of illegal drugs it is not advisable to use hypnosis. Illegal drugs can adversely effect the hypnotic process and any suggestions being made.


Hypnosis should never be used when in control of any vehicle or heavy machinery. It should never be used when your full attention is required to undertake any task.

Self Hypnosis

Self hypnosis has a wide variety of therapeutic applications. It is very effective in alleviating stress and tension; it is a great way to help you lose weight, be more successful, quit smoking, improve concentration and memory, overcome shyness and have more self-confidence. Self hypnosis gives you the ability to focus your energy on creating a self induced relaxed state of mind and body. When you are in a trance state you can focus your energy on specific goals. Self hypnosis can be used on anything that would depend on your own efforts.

The different stages of the Hypnosis script

There are three basic parts to any hypnosis script which have to be carried out in the order below:

  1. Induction – This is the part where you induce the relaxed alpha state.
  2. Suggestions – This is where the changes you want to make are given; and
  3. Awakening – This part is used to bring you out of the hypnotic state.

There is a fourth element which can be used if you find it difficult to get into a relaxed alpha state. This part sits between the induction and suggestions. It is called a deepener. As its name suggests, it is used to produce a deeper relaxed state.

Record your Script

When you put all the elements together, a complete hypnotic script can be quite long, running to several pages. As you will be conducting this on yourself I suggest you record your script and then play it back to yourself. This will be more effective than if you were trying to do it from memory. This is also a great way to use the same script over and over again.

You should record your hypnosis session in the second person as if talking to someone else.

Preparation for Self-Hypnosis Relaxation

Because you need to get into a relaxed state it is good to practice a relaxation routine prior to doing any hypnosis, especially before you have become accustomed to making yourself relax easily.

Relaxation- Muscle tensing method
Locate yourself in a well supported chair or lie down on your bed, sofa or some cushions on the floor. It should be in a quiet warm place and at a time when you won’t be disturbed. Make sure you get as comfortable as you can and then close your eyes.

Now take three deep breaths and as you release each just say to yourself ‘relax’.

Now we are going to start tensing your muscle groups while inhaling and then relaxing them on your out breath. As you work on each muscle group try and notice the different sensations and feelings you experience before and after tensing them. Notice how ‘YOU’ feel as you work through each group. This self awareness is what you do in mediation and is beneficial.

  • While taking in deep breath, in stretch your legs out, bending your feet and toes towards your head as hard as you can feeling your muscles tense as you do. Hold for a count of three, then as you breath out, relax them. Now repeat, except this time stretch your feet and toes away from you as you breathe in, hold for a count of three and relax as you breathe out, bringing your legs to a comfortable resting place.
    • Now squeeze your buttocks together as much as you can while breathing in and holding for a account of three. Relax your buttocks as you breathe out.
    • Now tense your stomach muscles before you breathe in, as it will be easier. Now breathe in and hold for a count of three and relax on your out breath.
    • For your chest, breathe in as hard as you can, expanding your chest as much as you can and hold for a count of three. Then relax on your out breath.
    • Now onto your hands and arms. Stretch out your arms clenching your hands as tightly as you can for a few seconds as you breathe in. You should feel your forearm muscles tense. Then relax as you breathe out.
    • For your neck, press your head back against the surface you chose to use as hard as you can and as comfortable and move it from side to side. Then relax.
    • For the face, try and frown and lower your eyebrows, hold for three seconds and relax, then raise your eyebrows for three seconds and relax. Now clench your jaw for three seconds and relax

    Once you gain experienced, you will find it easier to relax and in time, taking three deep breaths will be all you need. It is however beneficial to go over the full routine as often as you can.

    Creating the right atmosphere before you begin

    Because hypnosis is just like daydreaming you can apply it just about anywhere; in the bright sunlight indoors or outside; in the quiet, in a noisy atmosphere or in a dimly lit room. The ideal place however, when starting out with self hypnosis, is to find a quiet, comfortable warm room with subdued lighting. This is ideal for finding a relaxed alpha state. You can also play soothing background music if this helps you relax.

    Find a quiet room where you will not be disturbed, preferably a bedroom or a room with a chair you can recline on with no telephone. Dim the lights or turn them off. You may want to light a candle or burn some aromatherapy oils or incense. Use anything that helps you to create a relaxing atmosphere. Then make yourself as comfortable as possible, either in a chair with a headrest or by lying down on a couch or bed. Also use a blanket, as during Hypnosis your brain is actually working quite hard and this will increase the blood flow to the brain, causing your extremities to get cold.

    It is better to recline in a comfortable chair than lie down. Lying down may cause you to fall asleep. Although this isn’t a bad thing, it is best to be able to hear what is being said the first few times so that your script starts taking effect.

    Once you get skilled at doing self-hypnosis you can use it in busy places where there are noises and distractions. With practice you will find it easy to block out distractions and still be able to focus your mind intently.

    Breathing

    You should use your breathing to aid relaxation. Close your eyes and begin to breathe slowly and deeply.

    Breathing In
    Breathe in through your nose. When you breathe in make sure you breathe from your diaphragm (below your chest area). If you are doing this properly your stomach will go out as you breathe in. At the top of your breath, hold for three seconds. You can also imagine breathing in a white light which fills your body, revitalizing you, giving you energy.

    Breathing out
    Breathe out through your mouth, mentally counting to five slowly. As you breathe out, imagine you are breathing away any nervous tension in your body and silently say the word ‘relax’.

    You should do at least 5 to 10 rounds of breaths, more if it’s comfortable.

    To help prepare yourself while carrying out the breathing exercise you can also tell yourself silently or out loud that you are going to practice self-hypnosis. You can tell yourself silently or out loud how long you want to remain in the trance. Take the timing from your recording and specify the time it takes to complete the whole script.

    When you have carried out the relaxation and breathing routines a few times you will get a feeling for how long it takes or time it. You can then add some pleasant relaxation music to the start of your recording giving you time before the script starts. This saves you having to reach over to press play after you have become relaxed!

    How to word your affirmations / Suggestions correctly

    Always work on one goal at a time and over a number of sessions. For example, don’t work on releasing a bad habit and losing weight in the same session. While you can use a number of affirmations, they must all relate to the one chosen goal or topic for that session.

    Repeat your affirmations over and over in your mind, using as few words as possible. Be direct as though you are giving yourself a command. Sometimes you can create a rhythm with your breathing, saying the affirmation on each out breath like a chant or mantra.

    As we are using affirmations, they should always be directed in the present tense and ensure your statements are ‘Positive’. (If you haven’t already you should read the article on affirmations in the resources, you can also use some of the affirmation provided in your script). Always state them as if they are already in your reality.

    This is very important because your subconscious will believe exactly what it is told and cannot distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad

    For example, if you say ‘I am not poor’ or ‘I am not fat’ the subconscious will translate these and accept them as ‘I am poor’, ‘I am fat’.

    Avoid using words like “don’t”, “isn’t” and “can’t”. This is because the Subconscious mind doesn’t understand or accept such words. So what we put in is what we get out, garbage in garbage out!

    The subconscious does not process information, as this is done by the conscious.

    Don’t use statements like “I want to be fit and healthy”, this is a future tense. Use “I LOVE being fit and healthy.” Or “I AM fit and healthy.”

    As we take in our world through our senses we normally react better to words that engage them when spoken in our affirmations.

    The three categories to use are, Visual, seeing and reading; Auditory, listening and speaking and Kinaesthetic, touching and doing, some examples are:

    You should try and use words that engage these areas. You may find you respond to one more than the others. Use whatever feels right to you.

    Any suggestion or affirmation MUST be completely unambiguous and ALWAYS accentuate the positive.

    Whenever using affirmations, you should really ‘FEEL’ them as you repeat them or hear them. Try and resonate with the positive feeling and emotion. Repeat the affirmation with complete conviction and total belief in what you are stating. As you are making changes it may feel a bit odd at first, just stay with it. As your subconscious mind believes exactly what it’s being told without any analysis you will create the new positive belief and the changes you desire. This is why it is so important to take time and care to word your affirmations correctly.

    You can also use imagery as well as words while in the trance state. You will need to guide yourself so as with the affirmations use positive images, images on how you want the situation to be, the experiences you want, the outcome, the achievement, smells, colours, feelings and emotions. The visualisation should be used to ‘see’ the situation exactly as you want. Anything that makes it as real to you as possible, with the end result you want.  

    For example, if you are due to go for an interview and you are feeling nervous, you could use visualisation to see yourself going for the interview, arriving feeling composed, full of confidence and conducting yourself in a very positive way. You may see an element of nervousness. Use this to your advantage. See yourself being in control using any anxiety to keep focused and on the ball. Run the images in your mind like a short film using as much detail as possible. See the shape and size of the room, notice the colours of the walls and carpet, see the clothes you will be wearing, what they feel like against your skin. Notice the fresh smell of the room, the shape and softness of the chair. Make the picture bright and clear, using as many of your senses as you can. Make it as vivid as you can.

    The more vivid the better. Most importantly, always see yourself in a completely positive light, expressing yourself clearly and confidently, feeling very calm and composed under any pressure.

    This powerful technique can be used to prepare yourself for many things, such as  exams, a romantic date, public speaking, a sporting event, a business event or  social occasions.  

    Remember your unconscious mind cannot distinguish between what is real and what is imagined, so the more you imagine a positive future or event, the more you compound your inner belief that you are calm, confident and in control in these situations.

    Don’t worry if at first when starting out with self-hypnosis you think nothing much has happened; if you don’t feel any different or that you couldn’t see much in the visualisation. It is surprising how effective and how much a suggestion can be, even when in the lightest of trances.

    Your subconscious mind is powerful and works in a very subtle way. Have faith in what you are doing. Have fun with it and always remember the more you practise the better you will become.

    Your speech

    When you conduct a hypnotic script it is best to slow your speech and lower and soften your voice. This helps in maintaining a relaxed composure and keeping your conscious mind quiet and passive.

    Slowing your speech can easily be done by writing out your script like the example below:

    (Second Person)

    Make yourself comfortable... Place your feet flat on the floor... And rest your hands on your thighs...rest your hands down by your side... And gently allow your eyelids to close...  And just begin to allow yourself to relax... Letting all your cares and worries go... And at this moment in time... Nothing matters... As you switch off your thoughts... And just allow this time for yourself... So that you can unwind completely... And as you begin to feel more and more relaxed... Letting go of any worries or problems... That may have been on your mind lately...  And there is no need to fight any unwanted negative thoughts...  As they will soon drift out of your mind again... Just as easily as they came... I would like you to take a couple of deep breaths ... Slowly filling your lungs with fresh air... And as you exhale ... You will relax more and more... With every outbreath...

    Just by pausing a fraction of a second where we have added the “……” causes you to slow your speech. This will help maintain a relaxed state and also help aid the suggestions to sink in. Practice a few times to see how you feel. It might be that reading at a normal pace will be ok for you. There is a tendency however when recording yourself to speak quite fast so try this method and see how you get on.     

    The example above is in the second person. This method should be used if you intend recording your script and playing it back to yourself. If you prefer, you can recite your script from memory if you intend using the first person as in the example below:

    (First Person)
    I am…starting my.. self-hypnosis session now… From now…until I say ‘wake up’… I will become.. more and more… relaxed and focused within myself… Suggestions I give myself… will be effective… but this will apply… to only those suggestions I give myself… and which I consciously want… to be effective.

    As.. I close my eyes… and begin.. to drift downward…. I can imagine.. a blanket covering.. my feet… Every part…of my body.. covered.. by the blanket.. will become completely… relaxed… My feet… are becoming… deeply relaxed…. All… of my muscles… in my feet.. are becoming relaxed.

    Now… the blanket is moving.. up to my knees… Every muscle…and tendon.. in my body…..

    Which ever you decide to use, always break down the script so it causes you to slow your speech, lowering and softening your voice.

    Autosuggestion

    If you intend to use Self-hypnosis often you can use ‘Autosuggestion’. An autosuggestion is a word or phrase that you associate with an action, situation or event. Once you have induced yourself into a trance the first few times you can associate this ‘state’ of relaxation with a word or phrase that when used on its own, will induce the associated state with little or no effort.

    There is an example just after the induction below.

    Inductions

    Nearly all hypnosis sessions are preceded by a "hypnotic induction". The induction is a means of heightening your expectation, defining your role and focusing your attention. The induction is also used to relax you and help you into a trance state.

    Below is one you can use: (In the second person)

    Make yourself comfortable... Place your feet flat on the floor... And rest your hands on your thighs...rest your hands down by your side... And gently allow your eyelids to close...  And just begin to allow yourself to relax... Letting all your cares and worries go... And at this moment in time... Nothing matters... And you will notice how relaxed your whole body has become... From the top of you head... To the tips of your toes... Your eyelids have become very heavy... (and may even twitch at this moment... As you let go of any tension in your body...) And all the muscles in your jaw have become limp and relaxed... As your jaw sinks down... And your tongue rests gently on the bottom of your mouth... And you are beginning to drift down deeper and deeper... Feeling more and more relaxed with every word I speak... And as this wave of relaxation spreads down your neck and shoulders... And all the way down your arms to your fingertips... You may feel a tingling sensation in your fingertips... As your arms grow as heavy as lead... And you soon become aware of a growing peaceful feeling inside... A feeling of calmness and contentment... As you feel every muscle in your chest and abdomen... Become limp and relaxed... And all the muscles in your back are relaxing... Almost like a mental massage... And all the way down your spine... The muscles loosen and relax... And as you drift down deeper and deeper relaxed... You let this wave of relaxation spread all the way down your legs... So that your legs become as heavy as lead... And every muscle in your legs becomes limp and relaxed...  So that you are completely relaxed from the top of your head... To the tips of your toes...

    And as the outside world... Fades more into the background...  As you begin your journey into your own inner world... To that unique and special part of you... That only you can go to... You continue to let go... Of any negative thoughts or feelings... And any sounds around you... Or in the distance... Will fade into the background... The only sound that will matter to you... Will be the sound of my voice... Which will continue to take you deeper and deeper... Into a wonderful state of relaxation... And you may soon find that your mind begins to wander... And it doesn’t matter where you drift... Where you go... My voice will travel with you at all times... So that you will continue... To respond to me on an unconscious level...

    And in a few moments time... You will hear me say the word...  Nowwww... And when you hear me say the word... Nowwww... All the unnecessary nervous tension is going out of your body... And your body... Will continue to sink down... Becoming more and more limp ... More and more relaxed... And comfortable too... Just feel yourself sinking down into the couch/chair... Your head sinking down into the pillow... Becoming even more comfortable... Feeling completely at peace... And calm

    (You can add in the AUTOSUGGESTION here or below just after the deepener before the suggestions / affirmations).

    For example:
    Whenever I want to get… into a relaxed state…. just like the one… I’m in right now… all I have to do is repeat the word “Hypnosis” (Or phrase) “Self-hypnosis now” And I will immediately feel relaxed and calm ready to accept the suggestions I decide to use.

    Note: The word or phrase can be anything you want it to be. For example the word could be ‘Relax’ and the phrase could be ‘relaxation now’. If you were to use a deepener then it would go in after that as that would be the state you wanted to have the association with.

    Deepeners

    A deepener, as the name suggests is a script that helps create a deeper relaxed, calm state. There are a number of ways in which you can do this but the most common is to use the staircase method. Deepeners are particularly useful for those that find it difficult to relax.

    Deepener
    In a moment... I'm going to relax you more completely..... In a moment I'm going to begin.... counting backwards from 10 to 1.

    The moment I say the number 10..... you will allow your eyelids to remain closed...... The moment I say the number 10,..... you will,.... in your minds eye, see yourself at the top of a small set of stairs.

    The moment I say the number 9,..... and each additional number,.... you will simply move down those stairs.... relaxing more completely.... At the base of the stairs is a large feather bed,.... with a comfortable feather pillow.

    The moment I say the number one.... you will simply sink into that bed,.... resting your head on that feather pillow.

    Number 10, eyes closed at the top of those stairs. Ten ..

    Nine, relaxing and letting go......
    Eight, sinking into a more comfortable, calm, peaceful position ...
    Seven ....
    Six ... going way down ...
    Five ... moving down those stairs, relaxing more completely.
    Four ...relaxing, more and more
    Three…….
    Two……moving down the staircase, and sinking into a more comfortable position
    And one….completely relaxed, peaceful and calm……   

    (Note: If you use a deepener and wanted to instill an autosuggestion, then you could put the autosuggestion here).

    Suggestions / Affirmations

    Above we explained the importance of the construction of your affirmations and suggestions. This is quite simply because they are the means by which you will create the desired results you want.

    Script for abundance
    You feel abundance in and around you … it is here and it is now … you welcome this abundance with joy with delight … in your creative imagination you see an economic healing … it seems a miracle … you are blessed with abundance … you have opened an inner door and stepped in to the sunlight of abundance and all of its manifestations … and you say thank you for this great and wondrous gift … for you know that it comes not from you but through you … and with this new abundance you can grow and serve … that you may be a channel of blessings to others … abundance is an expression of love … you are tuned into the aura of abundance that surrounds you … like the electromagnetic field of a magnet which extends far beyond the magnet itself … so it is with your energy field … which reaches out far beyond the physical need … and as a magnet it draws abundance to you … it attracts and draws you to abundance …

    To attract abundance … you now act and think as one who now already has abundance … you smile often and easily … you enjoy taking time for the little things and the quiet things in life … you walk tall and proud and perhaps just a little faster now … you have many new exciting habits reflecting this abundance …

    To attract abundance … you take good care of your physical appearance … but you take even better care to balance your inner appearance … you are aware now to choose your spoken words carefully … but you are even more considerate of your unspoken words … you use positive cheerful words easily and often … for they reflect the positive, profound, cheerful feelings, deep inside of you…

    To attract abundance … you praise others for the good that they do … you compliment others honestly and sincerely … you thank others lavishly … you compliment and thank yourself as well … and welcome this new you … you like listening attentively to others … and they enjoy listening to you …

    To attract abundance … you find meaning and enjoyment in the work that you do … in your activities and in your service to others … Work is love and action … so you actively do more and contribute more than you are paid for … Your creative work is a pleasure and a fulfillment … but if your present job is a void of creativity and promise … then you can analyse the alternatives … and take the steps necessary for a rewarding, new career … in whatever field you choose …

    To attract abundance … you carefully make lists of your goals, your ideals and your plans … and especially your plan of action … you write out in detail what you will accomplish … how you will accomplish it … and when you will accomplish it ... you make realistic short-range goals … and you make reasonable long-range goals … and then you simply go out and do it … and you often believe that you are far ahead of your goals …and you are

    To attract abundance you make friends and associate with positive, creative and active people … for you realise that you are always influenced by the people around you … and with you … So it is vital then you choose wisely those with whom you work and play … live and love … and continue to grow … Positive, happy people encourage you and inspire you … as you encourage and inspire them …

    To attract abundance … you clean out all excess clutter in your life … you phase out all trash … you give away your neglected things … that others may use them … you make room for the many, many blessings coming your way … you joyfully bestow your blessings … by sharing your excess abundance with others … and as the useless and the unwanted depart … you experience the freedom and the lightness of an unburdened life … What then comes in to fill the void spaces … is a joy and a delight

    To attract abundance … you allow yourself to laugh often … and to laugh loudly … Your sense of humour has expanded into a habit of laughter … With happiness and laughter you attract new friends … positive people who laugh and enjoy life with you … With joy and laughter you improve your health and your appearance … you laugh… and the world laughs with you … you make people laugh each and every day … for laughter is like an internal massage …

    To attract abundance … you open your doors wide when opportunities knock … and you welcome them with open arms … Your life now is exciting and active and many, many blessings come to your door … If nothing succeeds like success, then nothing is more abundant than abundance …

    You open the door to the joyful discussion of abundance …
    You open the door to your actions and thoughts of abundance …
    You open the door to caring for your outer and your inner appearance …
    You open the door to praising others and praising yourself …
    You open the door to new joy in your creative work …
    You open the door to listing your goals, your ideals and your planes for action …
    You open the door to expanding your world of friends …
    You open the door to releasing the excesses in your life …
    You open the door to joy and to laughter …
    You open the door to the new you…today … now …and it is so…

    In your creative imagination you can see a clear sharp image of yourself attracting abundance … you take time to review your ideals and your goals … you hear friends congratulating you on your successes … You can visualise as well as feel a total enrichment has already been accomplished ... and now you realise the great secret of abundance … Abundance is not an end in itself, but a growing process … the result of your creative work and your efforts … You have learned from the past … You make plans for the future … but you live in the eternal now … You already have abundance … and by the joyful welcoming and sharing of abundance with others … You increase your abundance a hundred fold …

    Your conscious mind may not remember all that you have accomplished here today … but your subconscious mind always remembers … It is already acting upon the suggestions … and these visualised images in a positive manner … benefit … success … can come anytime … It can come back with you now … or you can experience it in due time … and in a little while when you return … you’ll feel just wonderful … but before you come back here … be aware that you can drift back, clearheaded … that you’ll be wide awake, refreshed, and very, very happy.

    Awakening

    As the name suggests the Awakener is to bring you out of your hypnotic trance.

    Each time that you use this method for easy relaxation, you relax more easily, more quickly, and more deeply. Relaxation is a skill that you are easily developing with trance.

For example: Each time you want to get relaxed you can use the phrase ‘self-hypnosis now’ and you will immediately feel more relaxed… the more you use the phrase the more relaxed you will become, say the phrase to yourself now….(pause)….Now whenever you want to get relax just say to yourself ‘Self-hypnosis now’).

    Now, I'm going to count from one to five, and then I'll say, "Fully aware." At the count of five, your eyes are open, and you are then fully aware, feeling calm, rested, refreshed, relaxed.

    All right. One: slowly, calmly, easily you're returning to your full awareness once again.

    Two: each muscle and nerve in your body is loose and limp and relaxed, and you feel wonderfully good.

    Three: from head to toe, you are feeling perfect in every way. Physically perfect, mentally perfect, emotionally calm and serene.

    On the number four, your eyes begin to feel sparkling clear. On the next number count, eyelids open, fully aware, feeling calm, rested, refreshed, relaxed, invigorated, full of energy.

    Number five: You're fully aware now. Eyelids open. Take a good, deep breath, fill up your lungs, and stretch.
