Tapping

Tapping or what many will know as ‘Emotional Freedom Techniques’ (EFT) is a new form of therapy that combines elements of psychotherapy and Acupuncture to relieve you from emotional imbalances, stimulating certain meridian points by tapping on them with your finger tips.

“Negative emotions are directly connected to a disruption in the body’s energy system and negative emotions are the cause of many physical health problems”


It is generally accepted that the negative, limiting beliefs we hold are the cause of many physical health problems we experience and recent scientific research has proven that your physical health and emotional well-being are linked to your beliefs.

As emotional stress can cause or contribute to physical ailments, pain or disease, often, by removing the emotions we find that we also get relief to the physical pain as well.

For the purposes of this document I will give a brief overview of the tapping points to use; an example of a script to remove worry; how to measure how well you are doing and how to create a setup and tapping script.

You will also have to refer to the muscle testing article here or use the resource tab from the main menu if you have not done so already. This will reveal if you have a certain belief or ‘emotional disruption’ that needs addressing.

The tapping Points are: Tapping Points - Head and Karate Chop

The Karate Chop (KC)
Eye brow (EB)
Side of the eye (SE)
Under the eye (UE)
Under the nose (UN)
Chin (Ch)
Collar Bone (CB)
Under the arm (UA)
Top of the head (TH)

 

The Collar bone runs from the little V at the base of your throat to your shoulder. It doesn’t matter if you don’t actually tap on the bone; you can tap just below it anywhere between the V and the shoulder. The ‘under arm’ point is where a women’ bra strap would be and about an inch or two below the nipple on a man. The top of the head point is just in the front of the crown. Don’t worry if you don’t get the exact spot as you will not get any adverse effects and you can usually rid yourself from the negative emotions by using the other tapping points alone.

Use one or two fingers to do the tapping. I find using the fore and middle finger together suit me best. Find which suit you and use them. There are no set rules on which you should use. It doesn’t matter which side of the body you use either or even if you change sides in the middle of a tapping exercise.

Setup Statement / Affirmation

Before you start with any tapping you have to have a statement that addresses the emotion, phobia, trauma or the issue you want to alleviate. These are known as a ‘Truth Statement’, ‘Setup Statement’ or ‘Affirmation’.

Let’s look at an example here. Test to see if you have a fear of public speaking. For the purposes of this example I will assume the client tested ‘Yes’ in the muscle test.

The setup statement or Affirmation would go something like:

“Even though I have this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept myself”.
Or
“Even though I have this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept, love and forgive myself”
Or
“Even though I have this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept, love and forgive myself and anyone else that contributed to these feelings”.

You will notice that in all the examples above the setup affirmation is addressing the emotion ‘fear’ and the cause, ‘public speaking’. Affirmations are usually ‘stated’ in the positive which you will notice in the examples above do not. This is because tapping is designed to ‘eliminate the negative’, making way for the positive.

Therefore you must "tune in" (see Story telling & Mind movies below) to the problem otherwise, you are not addressing it and the neutralising or balancing effect of the tapping will be of little use

Now we will use the example of ‘worrying’ and use money as the cause.

Example

Johnny has just received a demand in the post to pay an extra £3,000 tax for his self assessment from two years ago. Now Johnny doesn’t have the money and is worrying what might happen.

He wants to relieve himself of the worry as it is causing him distress which he is taking out on his wife and children.

Firstly Johnny muscle tests to see if he is worried about the Tax demand or if it is something else.

It transpires that it is the Tax Demand causing the worry and stress. He tested positive, the fingers were closed tightly using Muscle test method 1 or moved forward with muscle test method 2.

Because tapping relieves you from your ‘emotional discord’ it is always a good idea to bring the emotion up to its most profound level and then measure it on a scale from 0 to 10. 10 being the worst and 0 being completely relieved.

Story telling & Mind Movies

The best way to bring up your emotion is to relive it. To do this it is best to use ‘story telling’ or a ‘mind movie’ to raise the level of the emotion you are addressing. Story telling is best used when you are with someone. A mind movie is when you play out a scenario or events that will raise the emotion in you.

In this example Johnny plays out a ‘Mind Movie’ that goes along the lines of, he loses his temper while on the phone to the Tax office and slams the phone down. He pictures a letter arriving to say he has 14 days to pay or he will be in court. He then thinks he will be sentenced or even have his house re-possessed.

Hopefully you can start to see what is happening here and how you can bring up the emotions connected to the worry.

Now measure you emotion along the emotional scale. We will assume Jonny is at 8.

While Johnny is living and feeling this emotion so intensely he will now start the tapping process.

The process
Taking two fingers he repeats the Setup Statement or Affirmation three times while continually tapping the Karate Chop:

“Even though I am concerned and worried about losing my house and not having enough money to live on after I have paid off my Tax demand, I completely and deeply Love, Accept and forgive myself and anyone else that has contributed to these feelings”.

Now you don’t have to use the same wording for the statement or affirmation just as long as you address the ‘emotion’. Therefore you could change it to:

“Even though I am concerned and worried about losing my house, I completely and deeply, Love and Accept, myself.
Or
“Even though I am concerned and worried about not having enough money to live on after I have paid off my Tax demand I completely love, Accept, and forgive myself.

Always try and use wording that addresses your main ‘emotion’ as I have in the first example where Johnny ‘fears’ and is ‘worried’ he may lose his house and not having enough money to live on. This then deals with the emotions he is feeling.

Once Johnny has repeated the setup statement three times while continually tapping the KC he can start tapping on the other points. It is normal practice to do three rounds like so:

(NOTE: you don’t have to tap very hard or for very long. I tap for the length of time it takes to say the statement for each tapping point and then move to the next, about six to eight taps).

Eyebrow (EB): Even though I am concerned and worried about my Tax demand.
Side of eye (SE): I can negotiate installment payments
Under eye (UE): I know the Tax office does this for many people
Under the nose (UN): There is no reason why they won’t do it for me.
Chin (Ch): I have a good record for paying my tax
Collar bone (CB): This will go in my favour.
Under arm (UA): It is not in the interest of the Tax office to have my house re-possessed
Top of head (TH): The tax office, have a difficult job and do it well.

Eyebrow (EB): I have always managed to pay my way in the past
Side of eye (SE): and I will always be able to pay my way now and in the future
Under eye (UE): because money is constantly flowing to me in abundance
Under nose (UN): I am thankful and grateful for the money flow in my life
Chin (Ch): I have a roof over my head and food in my stomach
Collar bone (CB): That’s a lot to be thankful and grateful for and I am
Under arm (UA): The tax people are reasonable and I can pay my bill in installments
Top of head (TH): I’m sure I can negotiate a deal that will benefit both sides

Eyebrow (EB): I really do have a lot to be grateful for
Side of eye (SE): And I feel so much better now that I’ve recognized that
Under eye (UE): Feeling more and more grateful for the blessings in my life
Under nose (UN): Thank you, thank you, thank you for the people around me
Chin (CH): I’m so grateful for the roof over my head and food in my stomach
Collar bone (CB): I’m so happy to face each day with a smile instead of a frown
Under arm (UA): I now look at my situation with love, thankfulness and gratitude
Top of head (TH): And I’m choosing an attitude of gratitude for all my blessings.

NOTE: You will notice that there are positive statements this is because the setup statement dealt directly with the ‘emotion’ making way for the positive.

Once you have completed each round it is good practice to take a deep breath, stretch, roll your shoulder, wiggle your fingers and toes before checking where on the scale you are.

Now Johnny takes a measurement along his emotional scale by repeating the affirmation or using a statement that uses the word “feel”. “I feel worried……….”, he also plays back the mind movie to ‘feel’ the extent of the first round. Johnny is at a 4

Johnny proceeds to do the setup again but this time with more vigour. He emphasises the words in the setup statement especially the word ‘still’, saying it out aloud even:

“EVEN THOUGH I AM STILL CONCERNED AND WORRIED ABOUT LOOSING MY HOUSE AND NOT HAVING ENOUGH MONEY TO LIVE ON AFTER I HAVE PAID OFF MY TAX DEMAND, I COMPLETELY AND DEEPLY LOVE ACCEPT, AND FORGIVE MYSELF AND ANYONE ELSE THAT HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THESE FEELINGS”.

You could use the same setup statement or change it if you feel it doesn’t work as well the second time around. Just ensure you address the ‘emotion’. Look for some positive wording when going through the tapping process as well as trying to address the ‘emotion’.

Eyebrow (EB): Even though I am still concerned and worried about my Tax demand.
Side of eye (SE): I have always had enough money to get by on and more
Under eye (UE): and I know I will find a way to resolve this tax demand
Under the nose (UN): I have a loving caring family who love me.
Chin (Ch): I know that in the past I have always had enough Money to get by on
Collar bone (CB): I am thankful and grateful for the money flow in my life
Under arm (UA): I am a money magnet
Top of head (TH): And I appreciate having the money I do have

Eyebrow (EB): I have always managed to pay my way in the past
Side of eye (SE): and I will always be able to pay my way now and in the future
Under eye (UE): because money is constantly flowing to me in abundance
Under nose (UN): I am thankful and grateful for the money flow in my life
Chin (Ch): I have a roof over my head and food in my stomach
Collar bone (CB): That’s a lot to be thankful and grateful for and I am
Under arm (UA): The tax people are reasonable and I can pay my bill in installments
Top of head (TH): I’m sure I can negotiate a deal that will benefit both sides

Eyebrow (EB): I really do have a lot to be grateful for
Side of eye (SE): And I feel so much better now that I’ve recognized that
Under eye (UE): Feeling more and more grateful for the blessings in my life
Under nose (UN): Thank you, thank you, thank you for the people around me
Chin (Ch): I’m so grateful for the roof over my head and food in my stomach
Collar bone (CB): I’m so happy to face each day with a smile instead of a frown
Under arm (UA): I now look at my situation with love, thankfulness and gratitude
Top of head (TH): And I’m choosing an attitude of gratitude for all my blessings.

This brings Johnny down to a 2 and a level he feels comfortable with calling the Tax office.

You should keep repeating the tapping process until you reach a level you can easily cope with. You might have to change the statements several times to help move down the scale.

Tapping on Low Self-Esteem


Low self-esteem is the single biggest issue that prevents people achieving their desires. Use tapping (EFT) to help eliminate any ‘blocks’ you have about yourself and reap the benefits.

Because Tapping (EFT) eliminates the negative making way for the positive why not simply use it to input positive statements or Affirmations for areas you want to change that aren’t benefitting you. There are lists of Affirmations at the bottom of the Affirmations Article in the resources that you can use. For example if you have a low self-esteem you could tap using the following:

KC - Even though I have a low opinion of myself I completely and deeply, love, accept and approve of myself.

KC - Even though I have a low self esteem I completely and deeply, love, accept, approve and forgive myself and any one else that has contributed to these feelings.

KC - Even though I have a low opinion of myself, I completely and deeply, love, accept, approve and forgive myself and any one else that has contributed to these feelings

EB - I love myself more everyday
SE – I am lovable because I exist
UE - I attract and give praise freely
UN – I am worth loving
Ch - I love and approve of myself
CB - I am a receptacle of love
UA - I can forgive myself easily
TH - I am loved by others

EB - I am a good person
SE - I love and accept myself unconditionally
UE - I feel good about my life
UN - I am glad to be me
Ch - I approve of myself
CB - I experience love where ever I go
UA - I care about myself
TH - I appreciate myself

EB- I feel good about myself
SE- I am a gift to the world
UE – I am loved by others
UN - I feel good about my life
Ch - I am glad to be me
CB - I care about myself
UA - I love and approve of myself
TH - I am loveable just as I am

Tapping on a belief

If you have uncovered a belief that isn’t benefitting you, use tapping to eliminate it and use positive affirmations to rectify it in a positive way. For example, lets say you have a belief ‘Money is evil’. Use the following:

KC – Even though I believe Money is evil, I completely and deeply, love, accept and forgive myself.

KC – Even though I have a belief that Money is evil, I completely and deeply, love, accept and approve of myself.

KC – Even though I believe that Money is evil, I completely and deeply, Love, accept, approve and forgive myself and anyone else that has contributed to this belief.

EB – I am grateful for the money I have
SE – Money allows me to enjoy myself freely
UE – I am grateful that there is enough money for everyone
UN – I always use money wisely and judiciously
Ch – Money is only Paper and Metal, how can it be evil
CB – Money has allowed me to give some wonderful gifts to people I care about
UA – Money gives me freedom
TH – I am grateful for my freedom to use money as I want

EB – Money flows to me constantly from known and unknown sources
SE - I am a magnet for money
UE - I use money for the good of others and myself
UN – With the money I have, I have achieved a lot
Ch – I forgive those that help created the belief that money is evil in me
CB – Money isn’t evil it provides freedom and enjoyment for everyone
UA - I am grateful for the flow of money in my life
TH – Money is a wonderful

EB- Money isn’t evil, it is good
SE - Money connects us all together on so many levels
UE – Money is behind so many wonderful achievements
UN – I am grateful for the money in my life
Ch – I love money and money loves me
CB – I use it for the good of others and myself
UA – Money gives me freedom
TH - I am a magnet for money

Tapping is very forgiving so you won’t get a negative result if you get it wrong.

Use Tapping (EFT), in conjunction with the Law of Attraction and remove any limiting beliefs that are preventing you from achieving your desires.

Try it on everything

Tapping has been so successful on so many physical ailments, phobias, traumas, fear and many more that you can literally ‘try it on everything!’

If you want to stop yourself picking at food after you’ve had a meal just think about what it is you want to pick and start tapping.

For example let’s say you want a packet of crisp use the setup statement or affirmation:

“Even though I want a packet of Crisps, I completely and deeply, love and accept myself” and then tap on the points I’ve given above focusing on the thing you want:

For something like a packet of crisps you could just focus on the packet of crisps while tapping on each point. You wouldn’t need to use a setup statement unless there was an emotion connected to it.

NOTE: You will notice that there isn’t an emotion connected to the setup statement above. This I because you are addressing what it is you want to do. However there could well be an emotion associated with picking at food after a meal. If there is use it.

Eyebrow (EB): Even though I want a packet of crisp
Side of eye (SE): I have had a lovely meal and I’m actually really full
Under eye (UE): I don’t need anything else to eat
Under the nose (UN): I have a full stomach.
Chin (Ch): The meal was delicious and I really enjoyed it
Collar bone (CB): I don’t need to eat anything else
Under arm (UA): I am satisfied with what I’ve already eaten
Top of head (TH): I appreciate the meal I’ve had

Caution, things to be aware of

There may be instances where you deal with one emotion and another one will come up. This is because we sometimes suppress the cause of our emotions to the extent we don’t even know they are there. Only by removing one do we release another.

In Johnny’s case it was quite straightforward as we knew it was the Tax Demand. However if Johnny had tested ‘No’ in the muscle test we would need to dig to find the cause of his fear and worry.

In some cases emotions may be linked to a traumatic experience, a memory we would rather not relive or just because we simply don’t believe we hold such a belief and therefore won’t test for it. In these instances it can be difficult for the inexperienced to uncover the ‘bottom belief’ holding on to the emotion.

Digging for a ‘Bottom Belief’

When you are seeking the bottom belief you need to ask questions in such a way that the ‘real’ or ‘bottom’ belief is uncovered

For example, someone may think they have ‘money problems’ so you ask a series of questions like:

Q. Why do you have money problem?
A. Because money is the root of evil.
Q. Why is money the root of evil?
A. Because people who have it are crooked
Q. Why do you think people who have money are crooked?
A. Because that’s what my father always told me
Q. Why did your father tell you that?
A. Because he had to work hard and long hours just to get by and they didn’t
Q. Do you think you have to work, a lot of hours to make a living?
A. Yes
Q. Why do you think you have to?
A. Because that’s just the way it is
Q. If that’s the case how will you make a living?
A. I’ll have to work very hard for every penny.

So the bottom belief was a ‘fear’ they had to ‘work very hard to make a living’ which started from his father.

Another example:

Q. What is your greatest fear?
A. I fear being poor.
Q. What will happen if you’re poor?
A. I’ll loose everything
Q. What will happen if you loose everything?
A. I’ll end up on the streets.
Q. And what if you do end up on the street?
A. I’ll loose my children
Q. And what if you loose your children?
A. I’ll be a failure
Q. and what if you are a failure?
A. My mum said I’d be a failure

The bottom belief is a ‘fear’ of ‘being a failure’ and came from their mother.

You can now muscle test on these ‘bottom beliefs’ to see if they are true.

These are very simple examples and I hope they give you some idea about digging for 'bottom beliefs’. However some beliefs can be ‘cloaked’ by trauma and the questioning could bring this back up to the surface and you relive it.

An example could be if you tested ‘no’ to ‘I want to loose weight’ and find you feel worse after tapping on ‘even though I don’t want to loose weight I completely and deeply love, accept and forgive myself’ then the chances are you have something else connected to the belief. It could be a dislike of overweight or obese people. It could be that you were called names relating to your own weight. These could have caused a traumatic experience and further digging needs to be done to find the ‘bottom belief’.

If you feel like you are in this situation then I suggest you seek advice from a practitioner for Theta Healing or Tapping (EFT). They will be able to dig out your ‘bottom’ belief’ and rectify the situation.
